Horry County will pay boarding fees

The council in Horry County, South Carolina decided to tax casino boats. This coincides with the state law that says counties have the right to charge boarding fees and gross proceeds for casino boats. The law also states that casinos may be banned after five years.

The executive manager of SunCruz Casinos, Greg Karan, thinks that $3 per passenger is fair as opposed to the $7 the county is asking for. But he does not think the county should tax gambling proceeds. The boats already pay about $250 000 and 2 percent tax for equipment and food and drinks, respectively.

History of Dice Games

In ancient times, stones, sea shells, nut shells and pebbles were used as dice. The Romans and Greeks used to use anklebones, hence the expression "rolling the bones" that people use today.

During the Trojan War, soldiers would play with dice to entertain themselves in between battles. Even the Roman soldiers are believed to have tossed the old dice around while they used to stand guard. But the earliest dice game ever documented was in the Middles East, called Azahr (the Arabic word for "die").

Once the game made it to France, the name was changed to Hasard. The English called it Hazard. The game eventually made it to New Orleans in the 1800s but with various rules. The Louisiana French simplified the game calling it "crabes" which is known today as craps.
